Exodus 22:21-25

21 a“You shall not wrong a sojourner or oppress him, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt. 22 bYou shall not mistreat any widow or fatherless child. 23If you do mistreat them, and they ccry out to me, I will surely dhear their cry, 24and my wrath will burn, and I will kill you with the sword, and eyour wives shall become widows and your children fatherless.

25 fIf you lend money to any of my people with you who is poor, you shall not be like a moneylender to him, and you shall not exact interest from him.

Deuteronomy 15:9-11

9Take care lest there be an unworthy thought in your heart and you say, ‘The seventh year, the year of release is near,’ and your geye look grudgingly
Or be evil; also verse 10
on your poor brother, and you give him nothing, and he icry to the Lord against you, and jyou be guilty of sin.
10You shall give to him freely, and kyour heart shall not be grudging when you give to him, because lfor this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake. 11For mthere will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, n‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.’

Psalms 12:5

5 Because othe poor are plundered, because the needy groan,
pI will now arise,” says the Lord;
“I will place him in the qsafety for which he longs.”

Psalms 140:12

12 I know that the Lord will rmaintain the cause of the afflicted,
and swill execute justice for the needy.

Amos 2:6-7

Judgment on Israel

6Thus says the Lord:

t“For three transgressions of Israel,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because uthey sell the righteous for vsilver,
and the needy for a pair of sandals
7those who trample the head of the poor winto the dust of the earth
and xturn aside the way of the afflicted;
ya man and his father go in to the same girl,
so that my holy name is profaned;

Amos 3:9-10

9 Proclaim to the strongholds in zAshdod
and to the strongholds in the land of Egypt,
and say, “Assemble yourselves on aathe mountains of Samaria,
and see the great tumults within her,
and abthe oppressed in her midst.”
10“They do not know how to do right,” declares the Lord,
ac“those who store up violence and robbery in their strongholds.”

Amos 5:11

11Therefore because you adtrample on
Or  you tax
the poor
and you exact taxes of grain from him,
afyou have built houses of hewn stone,
but you shall not dwell in them;
agyou have planted pleasant vineyards,
but you shall not drink their wine.

Amos 8:4-6

4 Hear this, ahyou who trample on the needy
and bring the poor of the land to an end,
5saying, “When will aithe new moon be over,
that we may sell grain?
And ajthe Sabbath,
that we may offer wheat for sale,
that we may make akthe ephah small and the shekel
An  ephah was about 3/5 bushel or 22 liters; a  shekel was about 2/5 ounce or 11 grams
great
and deal deceitfully with false balances,
6that we may buy the poor for amsilver
and the needy for a pair of sandals
and sell the chaff of the wheat?”
